Our History

Metafocus are experienced players in online marketing. The company itself was founded in 1999 when Alan Clements, then owner of Clements Goddard advertising agency, Sheffield, sold out recognising the growing need for Internet marketing . He and founder director Ian Lockwood, started out working with one phone and one PC in the living room of Alan’s home in Bonsall, Derbyshire. 

Metafocus The Early Years - How our team looked back in 2001

Gradually over time we attracted prestigious clients including Nottingham City Council, EON, Manchester Metropolitan University, Belvoir Castle and Principia (NHS). During that time we transformed from full service web designers to online marketing pioneers. Alan and his team became experts in navigating the challenges of search engine optimisation and pay per click advertising.  As the Internet evolved Metafocus were able not only to provide customers with the results they were looking for but we were also able to share growing expertise at seminars and workshops hosted by Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce and others.

The next transformation for Metafocus came in November 2007 with our first visit to China. We were quickly able to identify the need for international online marketing amongst large Chinese companies. It was not enough to have an ‘international’ dot com English website; to achieve real success in overseas markets you need to have a website that has an international design, is written correctly in the local language, and has a local web address and hosting.

Realising the potential for this market required extensive investment to acquire knowledge of overseas online marketing. We have built an exceptional team that includes specialists in international sales and marketing, graphic design and web development, online marketing and linguistics. We soon began to see the fruits of this investment winning business with UK companies looking to market overseas such as Macmillan Publishing, Newson Gale and Clarifoil as well as building international sites for Chinese firms such as Lifan Auto, Aore, and Chegdu HiTech Industrial Zone.
